Interactions between the limpet Patelloida latistrigata and algae on an intertidal rock platform

چکیده

The small acmaeid limpet Patelloida lat istr~gata Angas and clumps of macroalgae are found in midshore intertidal regions dominated by barnacles. Interactions between limpet and algae were investigated experimentally to determine the effect of the herbivore on microalgae (this term includes propagules of macroalgae) as well as on macroalgal plants, and also the influence of both forms of algae on the behaviour of the limpet. P. latistrigata grazed on propagules of all algae, even species previously reported to be unaffected by grazing. The high diversity of algae in ungrazed areas was due to the abundance of microscopic propagules. Although limpets survived on macroalgae they tended to migrate to bare rock and grazed on rnicroalgae. Large germlings of ephemeral algae were not efficiently digested but could support limpet survival. Although P. latjstrjgata is a generalist grazer of microalgae, experiments reveal that its microalgal grazing is not obligatory.

Limpet grazing on a physically stressful Patagonian rocky shore

Many theories of consumer control of communities have come from studies conducted in relatively benign, temperate zone rocky intertidal systems. Here, we examine gastropod grazing and the maintenance of bare space on a dry, wind-swept rocky shore of Patagonia, Argentina. Two limpet species are the primary intertidal grazers. Siphonaria lessoni dominates mid and high intertidal zones, while Nace...

Movement patterns and feeding behavior of the limpet tectura testudinalis (Müller) along the mid-Maine Coast

Tectura testudinalis is a limpet that lives in the mid-intertidal zone along the coast of Maine and grazes on a variety of encrusting algae. A previous study asserted that T. testudinalis preferred to feed and rest on the encrusting alga Clathromorphum circumscriptum and that this species of limpet displayed homing behavior. However, I show that T. testudinalis does not home or return to any sp...

Exploitation of rocky intertidal grazers: population status and potential impacts on community structure and functioning

A wide range of anthropogenic activities are impacting the ecology of coastal areas. Exploitation of marine resources is one such activity, which, through cascading trophic effects, can have influences well beyond that of the target species. We investigated the mid-rocky-shore community structure of the Azores archipelago, a seldom-studied habitat, where there is a local tradition of exploiting...

Interaction between a fucoid canopy and limpet grazing in structuring a low shore intertidal community

The relative roles of a macroalgal canopy, Fucus serratus L., and a grazer, Patella vulgata L., in structuring a low shore community of a sheltered, rocky intertidal site were examined using a factorial experimental design. Canopy removal and grazer exclusion treatments were used to determine the effects of both factors on the understorey community. Re-establishment of the canopy was studied in...
